School Emergency Plan

A well-developed and implemented school emergency plan will reduce the impact of disaster. This plan should seek to protect school property, students & staff, and serve the local community. It must cover how to handle an emergency when it happens, as well as how to recover quickly.

Every school should have a site-specific Emergency Plan!

Include in the plan a strategy for communicating with families during a crisis, storing basic supplies, and how to be a shelter or where to seek shelter in the event of a crisis.

Be prepared – it reduces the level of anxiety and fear in a disaster.

Form a committee. Develop a plan which will best serve your school and local community.

We have been warned – it isn’t if a crisis is going to happen, it is when a crisis will happen.

To find peace, we must have a plan of action that is practical and rehearsed.

Use this Emergency Plan as a guideline to begin developing your specific School Emergency Plan. If you’d like to see a sample, we have a sample for businesses here.

Be sure to print and distribute an Emergency contact list
to all families. Ask them to fill them out, and to store them in their children’s backpacks, saving a copy for themselves to keep in a safe place, such as their wallet.

We have an Emergency Supply List

At the bottom of this page will be a link to a site that is wonderful for purchasing all of your emergency supplies! They even have premade kits available!

Secure all nonstructural components in and around the school building, such as we addressed on the School Risk Assessment page.

Make a list to determine what types of situations may arise based on your location.

Develop a schoolwide emergency plan for each situation.

P.S. When the earth shakes, rattles, and rolls, the best policy is still Duck, Cover, and Hold according to the American Red Cross.

This and all School Emergency Plans should be practiced regularly by all students and staff.

Make a list of all contacts. Keep it updated.

Talk with the fire department or code enforcement agency in your area to determine what regulations are in effect for displaced families. Note addresses and contact information for these places.

Contact local contractors or repair services and see which are willing to place your school on a priority list following a disaster. Note contact information and services offered.

Contact local insurance agent and verify your school is covered for all potential emergencies.

Plan, illustrate, and post an evacuation plan.

Once you have developed your School-Specific Emergency Plan, distribute it to students, staff, and families. Rehearse it quarterly!
